Mini-split vs. central air: which is right for your home?

If you're adding air conditioning, or replacing a system, the main choice is often between a ductless mini-split and a central system that uses ducts. Each has strengths.

How each works

Central air uses one outdoor unit and one indoor unit to push cooled air through ducts to the whole house. A mini-split uses an outdoor unit connected to one or more wall or ceiling units, with no ductwork, so each zone can be controlled separately. Many mini-splits are heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool.

Mini-splits tend to fit when

• Your home has no ducts, or the ducts are in poor condition
• You're cooling an addition, ADU, converted garage, or single room
• You have rooms that never reach the right temperature
• You want to control the temperature room by room
• You want very quiet operation

Central air tends to fit when

• You already have ducts in good condition
• You want the whole house cooled evenly with one system
• You prefer the look of ordinary vents over wall-mounted units
• You have an existing furnace that you're keeping and pairing with a new air conditioner

Cost and efficiency

Costs vary widely. A single-zone mini-split is often less expensive than central air, but covering a whole home with several zones can cost as much or more. Mini-splits are typically very efficient because there are no duct losses, while central systems can lose energy if the ducts leak. Ask for written quotes for both options in your home.

1. Look at your ducts. Do they exist, and what shape are they in?
2. Decide whether you need whole-house cooling or specific rooms
3. Think about whether you'd like heating from the same system
4. Get written quotes for both, including any duct or electrical work
