You can install the best furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner available and still have an uncomfortable home if the ducts are leaking, undersized, or damaged. Ducts are easy to overlook because they're hidden in walls, attics, and crawlspaces.

Signs your ducts may need attention

• Some rooms are always hotter or colder than others
• Your energy bills are higher than they should be
• Lots of dust in the house, even right after cleaning
• Musty smells when the system runs
• Rooms that take a long time to heat or cool
• Ducts in the crawlspace or attic that are crushed, disconnected, or missing insulation

Repair, seal, or replace?

The right answer depends on the condition of the ductwork, not just its age.

• Seal. If the ducts are in decent shape but leaking at the joints, sealing with mastic or foil tape can make a real difference.
• Insulate. Ducts running through unheated spaces lose a lot of energy if they aren't insulated.
• Repair. Disconnected or crushed sections can often be fixed without replacing everything.
• Replace. Ductwork that is badly damaged, contaminated, undersized for the system, or made of materials past their useful life is usually worth replacing.

Why this matters when you upgrade equipment

If you're installing a new heat pump or central air system, the ducts matter even more. A new system is sized based on your home's needs, but it can only deliver that performance if the ducts can carry the air. Undersized or leaky ducts can waste much of what you paid for.

Where ducts are impractical or too costly to fix, a ductless mini-split can be a good alternative for individual rooms or additions.

What to ask for

A good HVAC company should be willing to inspect your ducts as part of a system quote and explain what they found. Ask what condition they're in, whether they're sealed and insulated, and whether they are the right size for the equipment you're considering.
